Andrew Buffmire Bio

Andrew W. Buffmire is currently a Research Corporate Ambassador working with advanced technologies at the University of Utah (UofU). In this role he works with university researchers across multiple disciplines and various state agencies and private industry to provide a strategic interface between commercial enterprise and technology research at the university. While trained as an attorney Mr. Buffmire has been in business development and strategy roles in the telecommunications industry for over 20 years. He was on the launch team and business development director for Sprint PCS, a Vice President of Business Development for a publicly traded Sprint Affiliate and a Director of Strategy and Business Development in the Unified Communications Group at Microsoft. He was also the founder and CEO of two telecommunication technology companies backed by Silicon Valley Venture Capital firms. He has a long history in the development of collaborative business, industry and joint development projects and relationships in wireless and digital communication technologies and systems.

Of particular interest to the Utah Ignite Smart Cities community, Mr. Buffmire was a key participant in the development of industry support for the UofU’s $25m grant awarded by the National Science Foundation to build a Platform for Advanced Wireless Research covering the UofU, residential areas of Salt Lake City and the downtown business district. This project, which the UofU has named POWDER (Platform for Open Wireless Data-driven Experimental Research), establishes Utah’s leadership in advanced wireless research as it would apply to Smart City initiatives locally, nationally and globally.
